Face of East Africa Birding

HERBERT BYARUHANGA

A Pioneering Figure in East African Tourism and Birding

Born and raised in Western Uganda, Herbert Byaruhanga's remarkable journey began at the tender age of nine when he started working to pay for his school fees. In one of his most astonishing life episodes, some of his former students returned to teach him while he was still struggling to complete his secondary education. Nevertheless, his determination saw him through to university, where he earned a degree in tourism.

In the late 1990s, Herbert founded the Uganda Bird Guides Club, a pivotal move that connected him with the Chairman and Treasurer of the Global Council of BirdLife International. This connection led to his sponsorship for training in South Africa as a trainer of bird guides across Africa. Since returning from South Africa in 2001, Herbert has conducted numerous training sessions throughout East Africa, establishing the largest network of site guides in the region. In Uganda alone, over 95% of the guides have been trained under his mentorship.

Herbert's influence extends to the empowerment of women in birding. He has been instrumental in the establishment of Uganda Women Birders, Kenya Women Birders, and Rwanda Women Birders, and he has recently begun forging ties with Tanzanian guides.

Well-known for his extensive travels across East Africa and the world, Herbert has visited most of the prime birding locations in the region.

He is well-connected with site guides, tour leaders, tour operators, and hotels throughout East Africa and is a respected figure in the global birding community. He also holds a seat on the World Bird Fairs Council. Herbert currently serves as the President of the Confederation of Uganda Tourism Associations, the apex body representing the tourism private sector in Uganda.

Additionally, he is a member of the East African Tourism Platform, which unites the region's tourism associations.

Having guided numerous birding groups from around the world, Herbert is revered in Uganda, often referred to as "Mr. Product Knowledge" and affectionately known as the "Papa of Tourism."

The Wildebeest Migration

The wildebeest migration, often referred to as the Great Migration, is a continuous cycle of movement involving over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. This natural spectacle occurs throughout the year, with specific highlights depending on the time of year.

It involves over a million animals moving in a circular path across the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem. Wildebeest, along with other animals, follow an old route in search of food and water. They start by giving birth in southern Tanzania's Serengeti, near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Then, they travel in a clockwise direction to the Masai Mara in Kenya, before returning at the end of the year. Along the way, many animals are hunted by predators, but many more are born, keeping the cycle going.
